Area Information Sedona, Arizona There are few places on earth with the spectacular scenery of Sedona, Arizona, with its magnificent red rock formations, brilliant sunsets, and clear, starlit nights. One of the most memorable "gateways" to Sedona is the drive from 7,000 ft. elevation of Flagstaff, down through Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona at 4,500 feet, with impressive red rock cliffs looming above and lush greenery bordering a year-round bubbling creek below. Sedona is characterized by a mild, high desert climate, and 350-plus days of sunshine. The area is the second most-visited site in Arizona after the Grand Canyon. Established in 1902 and incorporated in 1988, the community was named for Sedona Schnebly, an early settler. Sedona spreads across the boundaries of two north-central Arizona counties, Coconino and Yavapai (named for the Yavapai Indians). It is situated 23 miles south of Flagstaff, 110 miles north of Phoenix and 240 miles north of Tucson. The Grand Canyon The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and one of our planet's most astounding accomplishments. The sheer majesty and beauty of the scenery found here is beyond belief. To really understand the Grand Canyon, to really appreciate it, you have to see it with your own eyes. The Canyon, as measured from Lee's Ferry just below Glen Canyon Dam at the southern end of Lake Powell to the Grand Wash Cliffs at Lake Mead, is 277 miles. It averages 10 miles in width from rim to rim and the park includes over a million acres of land. The elevation of the Colorado River, at the bottom of the Canyon, averages out to around 2,200 feet. The average elevation of the south rim is around 6,800 feet. The rocks that make up the walls of the Canyon range from 250 million years old (Kaibab Limestone) at the top to over 2 billion years old (Vishnu Schist) at the bottom. Each layer of rock represents a distinct geologic period of the Earth's past, and no where else on the planet is such a large section of geologic time displayed so well. The rocks that are found in the Grand Canyon represent a full 1/3 of our planet's age. Trees like the Piñon Pine and Utah Juniper that require very little water do very well here. Some of the animals to be seen on the south rim include Elk, Mule Deer, California Condors, Rock Squirrels, Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrels, Ravens, Piñon Jays and a few Grand Canyon Bighorn Sheep.
